Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was one of the leading advocates of the shin hanga (new prints) movement in Japan.
Water and Shadow: Kawase Hasui and Japanese Landscape Prints is the first publication devoted to prints from Hasui’s earliest and most creative period of woodblock print design, which lasted from 1918 through the Great Earthquake of 1923, when many of his early prints were destroyed. These works illustrate Japan’s landscape, the beauty of urban spaces, and modern life in Japan. Through these tranquil, dreamlike works, the publication explores the themes of nostalgia and longing—the search for individual and national identity in Japan during the early Taisho period (1912–1926), an era of rapid social and cultural change during Japan’s modernization.
Water and Shadow is divided into two parts. The first part contains five essays by scholars and curators from the United States, Canada, and Japan. The essay topics include the connections between painting and print-design in Hasui’s career, the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo’s development of shin hanga, Hasui’s work in relation to prints by Kiyochika and Shinsui, Hasui’s working method, and mediations on light in Hasui’s work and in Taisho literature. The second part comprises more than 143 full-color illustrations of Hasui’s prints and paintings, which are grouped chronologically, thematically, and geographically by series of prints.
The majority of the prints are from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts collection and were donated by Rene and Carolyn Balcer in 2006. The remaining works come from private and institutional collections. In addition to three Hasui screen paintings and a hanging scroll, the catalogue also presents little-known examples of his work in design and illustration.
