Written by an indigenous author, Guided by the Spirits is a case study of youth suicide in the Sault Sainte Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians that aims to answer why youth suicide occurs in such high numbers within indigenous communities and what can be done to prevent it. Using qualitative methods and relying on indigenous experience, collaborative approaches, and emic theoretical models, the author explores the social and historical significance of youth suicide in this Ojibwa community. The resulting picture—composed of interviews, field notes, and creative ethnographic writing—will help policymakers and researchers to better understand the causes of youth suicide among indigenous peoples and to create more effective policies to prevent it. Also included in this monograph are interviews with Sault tribal elders on youth suicide in their community.
