The new edition aims to simplify the math, emphasize the theory, and consolidate the information needed by electrical engineers and technicians who support operations, maintenance, protective relay systems, and betterment projects for generating stations and industrial facilities. It begins with a cursory review of basic electrical phenomenon and then provides additional insights into electrical theory. Single phase and three phase electrical theory is explained in a simplified manner that is not presented in other books. All chapters have been expanded and updated, with the inclusion of an entirely new chapter.

Thomas Baker was employed by Southern California Edison (SCE) for 36 years, initially completing a protective relay technician apprenticeship followed by induction into the Marine Corps. He returned to the technician position following release from active duty and attended night school on the GI Bill. Following graduation, he held progressive responsibility as a metering engineer, protection engineer, distribution engineer, shop apparatus engineer, and for the last 15 years was the principal electrical engineer for 12 large gas, oil, and coal generating stations. Following an early retirement due to deregulation in California, he continues to perform large generating station consulting work as the principal engineer for Sumatron Inc., and including SCE, has completed approximately 35,000 megawatts of protective relay setting and design reviews for large gas, oil, coal, and nuclear generating stations. Baker has presented numerous 4-day hotel and on-site training seminars in the United States and Canada, based on his book, "Electrical Calculations and Guidelines for Generating Stations and Industrial Plants" and associated "EE Helper Power Engineering" software program. He holds two patents and had the originating ideas for two additional SCE patents, all related to the electrical power field. Baker completed a master’s degree in electrical power engineering and management and is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
