Professor Hans Beger MD FACS is Chairman and Head of theDepartment of Surgery, University of Ulm, Germany. He has published675 papers and has served as an Editorial Board Member for 28international surgery journals. He has also edited 21 books anddelivered more than 250 international lectures. He also developed asurgical procedure for removing the head of the pancreas whilepreserving the duodenum: known as Beger's operation.
Professor Andrew L. Warshaw MD FACS is the W. GeraldAusten Professor of Surgery, surgeon-in-chief and chairman of theDepartment of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He hasmade important contributions to the diagnosis and treatment ofpancreatic cancer and the pathogenesis and management ofpancreatitis. A distinguished teacher, editor and prolific writer,he is Editor-in-chief of the journal Surgery. He has servedon the editorial boards of 15 other major journals and as visitingprofessor at more than 50 major universities in the U.S. and aroundthe world. He serves as a governor of the American College ofSurgeons, and president-elect of the Halsted Society. He ispast-president of the Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tractand International Association of Pancreatology.
Professor David Whitcomb MD PhD, is Professor ofMedicine, Cell Biology & Physiology, and Human Genetics, andChief, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition,University of Pittsburgh, PA, USA (Pancreatologist). He founded anddirects the Center for Genomic Sciences beginning in 1995. He hasreceived numerous awards, including election to the prestigiousAmerican Society for Clinical Investigation ("Young Turk"). Heconducts basic and translational research with a focus onpancreatic diseases. His laboratory group discovered the genecausing hereditary pancreatitis and other causes of pancreaticdisease. In addition, he leads several research projects onalcoholic pancreatitis and pancreatic physiology. He has publishedover 100 manuscripts and recently co-edited two books on inheriteddiseases of the pancreas. He is a Counselor for the AmericanGastroenterology Association (AGA), the American PancreasAssociation and the International Association of Pancreatology, andis Chairman of the Pancreatic Disorders Section of the AGA. He isan Associate Editor for Pancreas, Digestive Diseases andSciences, and Pancreatology. He co-founded the MidwestMulticenter Pancreatic Study Group and serves on national andinternational committees for the major gastroenterology andpancreatic societies. He has just been elected President of theAmerican Pancreas Association.
