Prepared and updated by the AABB Interorganizational Task Force on Domestic Disasters and Acts of Terrorism, this handbook assists community blood centers, hospital blood banks and transfusion services in preparing for and responding to domestic disasters and national acts of terrorism that affect the blood supply. This publication should be used as a supplement to any existing disaster plans that you already have developed, and must be referred to should a blood crisis of national scale occur.
The handbook contains two major areas of focus:
1) preparation strategies to implement prior to an event, and
2) activation procedures once an event has occurred.
Included as an addition to the handbook is the Disaster Operations Handbook Hospital Supplement, prepared especially for transfusion services and for hospitals that do not collect allogeneic blood. The supplement will help facilities prepare for their role in providing blood for transfusion in the event of a disaster. It also includes instructions for working with local blood centers to assess the effects of a disaster on the local blood supply.
