This leads, in turn, to the question whether a “merciful social service” – like the German Churches’ Diakonie or Caritas – must necessarily pursue a monetary successful business basis. Under which circumstances the social services may be allowed to work in an economic deficit situation? Based on a detailed interpretation of St Luke’s text, a reference model is given for the business ethics of a social service which follows the “go and do likewise” of St Luke 10, 37.
