Richard III, Shakespeare’s great manipulator, and media potentially as manipulative as cinema and television make a very good match. This book explores the possible variants of Shakespearean film by surveying in what different ways and formats Richard III has appeared on screen. The films are discussed with regard to differences in historical and medial circumstances as well as distinctions in type of “Shakespearean film” — from silent one-reel films to a gangster movie of the 21st century. The analysis furthermore focuses on the following questions: How does Richard III feature in the film? What elements of the play were used? If (some of) the text of the play is used, how is it treated? Why did the filmmaker( s) turn to Richard III for this particular production? Which filmic devices were employed by way of adapting a stage play to the screen?
