The stone sculptures of Delphi stand as landmarks in the history and art history of the Ancient Greek world; and yet paradoxically little is known of them. These works – more than 2000 fragments – were discovered for the most part in the Great Excavation from 1892 to 1903 but published in part only in the seven volumes of the Fouilles de Delphes IV between 1909 and 2003. The present compilation brings together for the first time all the known stone sculptures of Delphi. This is the first detailed publication for some largely unpublished groups: the decoration of the Tholos, the 'Akanthos Column', the statuary groups of Daochos and the 'Philosopher', the portraits and the ideal modelling of the imperial period. Other records have been thoroughly updated, particularly the kouroi and korai, the caryatids and the sculpted decoration of the Ionic treasuries, and the decoration of the Doric temples of the Archaic period. This book is the result of a major work of arrangement, computerization and analysis carried out over several campaigns. It supplements and renews our knowledge of these sculptures, illustrated with entirely new photographic coverage and a score of original drawings.
