Cumberland Posey’s life was an African American success story. He began his baseball career in 1911 playing outfield for the Homestead Grays, a local black team in his Pennsylvania hometown. But he soon became the driving force behind the squad as it turned into the dominant semi-professional team in the Pittsburgh area. By the late 1930s the Grays were at the top of the Negro Leagues with nine straight pennant-winning years. When he wasn’t running the Grays, Posey was a league officer, served 13 years as the first black member of the Homestead school board and wrote an outspoken sports column for the major African American weekly newspaper, the Pittsburgh Courier. In his athletic prime he was regarded as one of the best black basketball players in the East, organizer of a team that was the consensus national black champion for five years running. These accomplishments earned him a rare tribute among sports figures—10 years after his election to the baseball Hall of Fame, he became a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, one of only two people to enter a pair of professional sports halls.
