Steven I. Pfeiffer is a professor at Florida State University, where he also serves as Director of Clinical Training. Previously he was a professor at Duke University, where he served as Executive Director of Duke's gifted program, TIP, and prior to that, Executive Director of the Devereux Institute of Clinical Training and Research, in Villanova, PA.
Professor Pfeiffer is an internationally-recognized expert on the mental health and well-being of the gifted. According to Yale University's Alan Kaufman, Dr. Pfeiffer is "among a small group of the world's leading experts in the gifted field. He is an unusually articulate spokesperson on the varied topics that comprise the broad domain of gifted education and gifted assessment."
Professor Pfeiffer twice testified at the White House before the National Task Force on Health Care Reform. In 2012 he was a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the National Institute of Education, in Singapore. He recently was selected as a Fulbright Scholar in Israel. He has an active clinical practice and conducts workshops and gives talks to parents, teachers, and mental health professionals on topics related to the gifted in the United States and internationally.
Professor Pfeiffer is lead author of the Gifted Rating Scales, among the most widely used rating scales in gifted identification. His test has been translated into a number of foreign languages and used to assist the IQ test in identifying gifted children and youth.
His most recent books include Serving the Gifted, published in 2013 by Routledge, and Essentials of Gifted Assessment, published in 2015 by Wiley. In 2015, he co-edited with Maureen Neihart and Tracy Cross the second edition of the Social and Emotional Development of Gifted Children: What Do We Know? published by Prufrock Press. The second edition of his Handbook of Giftedness in Children, by Springer, will soon be published.
Dr. Pfeiffer is on the editorial board of ten journals and frequently is invited to consult with educational programs and various organizations. For the past five years, he has served as a consultant to the Eris Foundation in Milan, Italy.
