People and businesses rely on transportation networks every day, but what happens when critical assets fail unexpectedly or pollute our environment? Smart Infrastructure Management provides an interdisciplinary exploration of this intricate and dynamic landscape, enriching the theoretical and practical understanding of state-of-the-art technologies that can productively support various stakeholders in the decision-making process throughout the entire lifecycle of infrastructure projects.

The volume examines the evolutionary trajectory, inherent challenges, and pivotal methodologies of modern infrastructure management, with a narrative that spans several domains to coordinate a fully integrated approach. Key topics include data collection and sensors, spatial modeling and simulation tools, asset management, preventative or predictive maintenance measures, computational techniques, cybersecurity, and decision support systems. The transformative impact of smart cities is also explored, emphasizing their role in enhancing infrastructure capabilities.

With real-world case studies systematically featured to illustrate successful implementations and valuable lessons learned, this investigation appeals not only to researchers and students but also to professionals across diverse fields, ensuring that effective strategies are integrated into industry practices, which are essential for improving infrastructure capabilities in line with society’s ever-changing needs.

Ai, Chengbo
Chengbo Ai is an assistant professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, USA. He received his PhD from Georgia Tech, USA, in transportation systems engineering and his BS from Peking University, China, in electrical and computing engineering. His interdisciplinary research focuses on developing computational models, AI algorithms, and remote sensing hardware systems as they are applied in transportation asset management, geometry design, roadway safety, pavement preservation and maintenance, and many other critical transportation applications.

Qiu, Shi
Shi (Sheldon) Qiu is a professor at the School of Civil Engineering at Central South University (CSU), China. From 2015 to 2019, he was an associate professor at the Beijing University of Technology, China, after serving as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas, USA, in 2014. With a PhD in civil engineering from Oklahoma State University, USA (2013), an M.S. and a B.S. in management science from Beijing Jiaotong University, China (2009, 2007), his interdisciplinary research focuses on transportation (pavement, airport, and railway) and municipal (e.g., utility tunnels) infrastructure development, performance measurements, and intelligent infrastructure asset management and operation. Dr. Qiu currently also serves as the executive deputy director at the Research Center for Railway Infrastructure Smart Monitoring and Management, CSU, China. He has published extensively on these topics in leading academic journals. He has also been awarded numerous research grants from government agencies and industry sponsors to support his work, which are making significant contributions to the field of civil engineering and infrastructure monitoring.

Zaheer, Qasim
Qasim Zaheer is an accomplished PhD scholar and researcher, affiliated with the School of Civil Engineering at Central South University, China, since 2022. His current research focuses on intelligent monitoring techniques for rail transit infrastructure, and he is working under the expert guidance of Dr. Qiu at the Research Center for Railway Infrastructure Smart Monitoring and Management.

Wang, Jin
Jin Wang is a researcher and assistant professor affiliated with the School of Civil Engineering at CSU, China. He was awarded his PhD degree in Transportation Management Engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University, China. He has dedicated several years of research to operations, digital visualization, simulation modeling, and algorithm design for transportation infrastructure, which has resulted in a number of highly cited academic papers. He also has seven national patents to his name.
