Provides an introduction to the issue of values in psychiatric diagnostic classification
- The second book in the IPPP series, following Nature and Narrative by Fulford (0-19-852611-3, publishing May 2003)
Description:
Psychiatry, in contrast to traditional branches of physical medicine, is laden with diverse value judgements. There is little disagreement that nausea or paralysis are 'bad' conditions. Our 'values' about these 'traditional' symptoms are shared. However, psychiatric disorders often concern areas of human experience and behaviour involving beliefs, judgements, morals, preferences, desires and assumptions. These are areas in which our values are typically not shared, indeed, they are likely to be extremely diverse and subjective. This book will examine the nature and significance for practice of the value-content of psychiatric diagnostic classification.
