This book provides a comprehensive overview of Japanese Encephalitis (JE), its pathobiology, and associated challenges for treatment and prevention. It focuses on various aspects of Japanese Encephalitis, including global epidemiology, genome organization and genotypes, virus-host interactions, immunopathogenesis, transmission dynamics, antibody-dependent enhancement, clinical characteristics, laboratory diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and control strategies. It provides a brief account of the Japanese encephalitis vaccine, their immunogenicity, protective ability, and impact of JE’s vaccine in reducing the burden of the disease. It also helps in understanding the molecular and cellular factors involved in the JE virus neuro-invasion and inflammatory processes. The book uniquely presents cutting-edge information and provides an edited information source for clinicians, virologists, pathologists, and immunologists.

Professor (Dr.) Shailendra K. Saxena is a vice dean and professor at King George's Medical University, Lucknow. His primary research interest is to understand molecular mechanisms of host defense during human viral infections and develop new strategies for predictive, preventive, and therapeutic strategies. Dr. Saxena has received specialized training in COVID-19: tackling the novel Coronavirus, by London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and UK Public Health Rapid Support Team; and in Emerging respiratory viruses, including COVID-19: methods for detection, prevention, response, and control; Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) for novel Coronavirus (COVID-19); COVID-19: Operational Planning Guidelines and COVID-19 Partners Platform to support country preparedness and response by The United Nations Country Team ( UNCT)-World Health Organization's Health Emergencies Programme (WHE). Prof. Saxena's work has been published in reputed international journals. His work has been highly cited by numerous investigators globally and honored by several prestigious national and international awards, fellowships, and scholarships in India and abroad, including various Young Scientist Awards, BBSRC India Partnering Award, and named as the Global Leader in Science by The Scientist magazine (USA) and International Opinion Leader/Expert involved in the vaccination for JE by IPIC (UK). Prof Saxena has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists UK (FRCPath), The Royal Society of Biology UK (FRSB), The Royal Society of Chemistry UK (FRSC), The Academy of Environmental Biology, India (FAEB), Indian Virological Society (FIVS), The Biotech Research Society, India (FBRS); and Fellowship of the (European) Academy of Translational Medicine Professionals, Austria (FacadTM). He has been awarded Dr. JC Bose National Award of Department of Biotechnology (DBT, Min. of Science & Technology, Govt. of India) in Biotechnology and has active collaboration with US universities.
