Professor Robin Smith is Head of the Centre for ProcessIntegration at the University of Manchester Institute of Scienceand Technology (UMIST) in the United Kingdom. Before joiningUMIST he had extensive industrial experience with Rohm& Haas in process investigation and process design, and withICI in computer-aided design and process integration.. He was amember of the ICI Process Integration Team that pioneered the firstindustrial applications of process integration designmethods. Since joining UMIST he has acted extensively as aconsultant in process integration projects. He has publishedwidely in the field of chemical process design and integration, andis a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow ofthe Institution of Chemical Engineers in the UK and a charteredengineer. In 1992 he was awarded the Hanson Medal of theInstitution of Chemical Engineers in the UK for his work on cleanprocess technology.
