This book focuses on the fundamentals of time-mode approaches and challenges encountered in the design of CMOS-based time-mode circuits. Building blocks of time-mode circuits such as voltage-to-time converters, time amplifiers, time registers, and time integrators are investigated. The design of time-to-digital and digital-to-time converters, the key building blocks of time-mode circuits, is covered as well as techniques that minimize the impact of nonlinearities in time-mode circuits. Time-mode analog-to-digital converters and time-mode phase-locked loops are emphasized in the book’s last section.

Fei Yuan received BEng degree in electrical engineering from Shandong University, Jinan, China, in 1985, MASc degree in chemical engineering, and PhD degree in electrical engineering from University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, in 1995 and 1999, respectively. During 1985-1989, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Changzhou Institute of Technology, Jiangsu, China. In 1989 he was a visiting scholar at Humber College of Applied Arts and Technology, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Lambton College of Applied Arts and Technology, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. He was with Paton Controls Limited, Sarnia, ON, Canada as a Controls Engineer during 1989-1994. Since 1999 he has been with Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he is currently a Professor and the Chair of the Department.

Dr. Yuan is the author of CMOS Circuits for Passive Wireless Microsystems (Springer: New York, 2010), CMOS Active Inductors and Transformers: Principle, Implementation, and Applications (Springer: New York, 2008), CMOS Current-Mode Circuits for Data Communications (Springer: New York, 2007), and the principle co-author of Computer Methods for Analysis of Mixed-Mode Switching Circuits (Kluwer Academic Publishers: Boston, 2004). In addition, he is the author/co-authors of over 70 research papers in refereed international journals, over 120 research papers in refereed conference proceedings, and several book chapters. Dr. Yuan was awarded Ryerson Research Chair by Ryerson University in 2005, Research Excellence Award by Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science of Ryerson University in 2004, the post-graduate scholarship from Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada during 1997-1998, and the Teaching Excellence Award from Changzhou Institute of Technology in 1988. Dr. Yuan currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Electrical and Electronics, an Associate Editor of Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and is on the Editorial Board of a number of international journals. Dr. Yuan is a senior member of IEEE and a registered professional engineer in the province of Ontario, Canada.
