This volume examines a fundamental concept of language within a historical perspective. The concept is that of public and private communication, the historical period ranges from the late middle ages to the late modern, and the language is English. Nicholas Brownlees is Associate Professor of English Language at the University of Florence, Italy. His main research focuses on the language of print news in early modern Britain.

Gabriella Del Lungo Camiciotti is Professor of English Language and Linguistics at the University of Florence. Her current research interest focuses on the pragmatic and discursive analysis of both narrative and academic/professional texts from a historical perspective.

John Denton is Associate Professor of English Language at the University of Florence. His research interests cover Italian-English contrastive analysis, history of translation (with special reference to the English Renaissance), religious discourse, literary and audiovisual translation.
