The world is now witnessing a new era-an era that requires States to respect human rights as a basic requirement for peaceful cohabitation throughout the international community (from the Preface).
Profound experiences, diverse perspectives, complex thought – a recent gathering of an international group of eminent judges and legal practitioners shed new light on the relationship between courts, judges, and human rights. This publication contains the papers presented at this conference, entitled The Role of the Judiciary in the Protection of Human Rights, held in Cairo under the auspices of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt and the British Council.
The Role of the Judiciary in the Protection of Human Rights provides a wide range of perspectives on the importance of the judiciary in the protection of universally recognized human rights. Issues covered include: the precise meaning of human rights and freedoms and how they must be acknowledged and safeguarded in practice, the ways different countries protect human rights, the real scope of the judiciary/human rights relationship, and the mechanisms which make it possible for the judiciary to play a vital role and the obstacles which can act to diminish it. The editors have ordered these papers in a logical way to best facilitate ease of reference. The role of the judiciary is key to any attempt to protect human rights. Only by a dialogue of shared information and experience will a viable and fair human rights protection policy be possible. In this vein, The Role of the Judiciary in the Protection of Human Rights offers not only lessons for the Arab region but also for the world at large, making it a valuable addition to the study and promotion of human rights.
