This book provides a critical assessment of the theories and practice of environmental security in the context of the Athropocene.
The work analyses the intellectual foundations, the evolution and different interpretations, strengths, potentials, and contributions of the environmental security concept, but also its weaknesses, incoherencies, distortions, and instrumentalization. To do so, the author employs a critical environmental security studies analytical framework with the aim of providing a better and critical understanding of the environmental security concept for both its theoretical interpretations by scholars and institutions and for its application within international politics. Uniquely, this analysis is placed within the context of the anthropecene. The work pays significant attention to the Environment and Security Initiative (ENVSEC) which, to date, has largely been overlooked in current literature. The goal is to study how ENVSEC’s practice could inform and shape the environment security theory, and also to explore how, conversely, new theoretical insights could contribute to the enhancement and development of ENVSEC’s activities. Furthermore, it examines the practice-theory divide, and the political implementation of the evironmental security concept in response to global environmental change in relation to different actors.
This book will be of great interest to students of environmental security, critical security studies, global governance and IR in general.
