This collection of essays by Prof. Heuser combines historical research with cutting-edge analysis and makes a significant contribution to the study of the history of strategic thinking.
There is a debate among leading writers on strategy as to whether strategy in its modern definition existed before Clausewitz or even the early 20th century. On the whole, very little original research is conducted on this vast field, however, as sources use obsolete and foreign languages, are difficult to come by, and of course do not use the terminology that is now established, precisely because the word "strategy" was not yet used in Western languages. The case studies featured in this book, based on such challenging sources, show that strategic thinking did indeed exist before the last century, even if there was no commonly agreed word for it.
In a series of stand-alone case studies, this book combines in-depth historical documentary research with strategic studies analysis. The case studies will be of interest to historians and analysts of strategic studies or international relations more generally, specialising on different fields as well as any students of strategic studies with a wider and more comprehensive approach who can thus be introduced to the material.
