This book aims to teach Japanese characters step by step, whilst also simultaneously highlighting vocabulary needed by beginners. Each word comes with an illustration to facilitate the reader’s visual learning. The book also contains information on how to write a sentence by using the characters and vocabulary presented to the reader and contains exercises that teachers can use as homework. The attached CD contains the sounds of each character, vocabulary exercises, and instructions on how to type in Japanese. The exercises correspond closely with the book and learners can practice after learning every ten characters.

Kai, Masumi
Masumi Kai received her MA in Japanese Language Studies and her PhD in Language and Culture from Osaka University of Foreign Studies (currently Osaka University). Her research fields are Japanese discourse, language acquisition, and colonial education. Dr Kai specialises in Japanese language teaching and has taught in Taiwan and at the International Student Center, Okayama University, Japan. She was also a scholarship researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara and Harvard University, receiving sponsorship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. She is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Guam and is a coordinator of the Japanese Studies Program.
