The Invention of the Theologian. Wittenberg Instructions for the Study of Theology in the Age of the Reformation and Confessionalization.
What does a theologian have to know in order to talk about God in a responsible manner? Marcel Nieden examines the instructions for the study of theology which originated in the age of the Reformation and confessionalization and which has only partially been noticed by historical research. He deals in particular with the Wittenberg sources from the 16th and 17th century, looks into the concepts of theological training contained in them and also studies the regulatory framework of the study of theology at the Leucorea. In a comparison with influential concepts from the Roman Catholic and reformed denominations, the author provides important insights into the process of intellectual development which contributed to the establishment of Protestant self-confidence and thus to the socialization of the new social group of Protestant clergy.
