It is well-known that migration in the early modern period had many causes. There were religious fugitives, economic migrants and pilgrims in this period, and labour migration and mass pilgrimages also took place. All these migrants were bearers of cultural traditions. They saw works of art, learned foreign languages and customs and brought many cultural influences back home, where they inspired to new creativity, sowing the seeds of new ideas. Thus, migrants became important agents in the formation of a European culture – a culture that was never autochtonous, but thrived on exchange and transfer. On the basis of a broad definition of migration, the essay traces the diverse relations between migratory movements and culture.>
