Human beings suffering innocently raise the question why God allows fundamental evil. This leads to presume that God himself has its responsible part in the realization of suffering. The biblical texts of complaint and accusation open space and time for such inquiry and offer the possibility of the readers own performance of lament. But is it really permitted to speak with God and to God in this way?Psalm 44 is Israels cry of charge to his God – as a prayer. In this psalm the literary concepts of the afflicted prophet, the substitutional suffering servant of God, as well as of Job disputing against his creator, come to their culmination.
