Dispute as a means of settling conflicts of interest is a constant in human collectives. It is therefore no wonder that since Cain and Abel and the wrath of Achilles, disputes have been a perennial theme in European culture. Going beyond war and violence, disputes also have a creative potential, as manifested in the most diverse genres of fictional and non-fiction literature. Disputes are sometimes portrayed as intellectual games in which all the tricks of the trade are used, sometimes as instruments for major confrontations in the context of religious, cultural and political formation processes. This volume is dedicated to the portrayal of literary disputing culture and its functionalisation in societal transformation processes. Examples from antiquity to early modernity are examined from an historical, linguistic and literary perspective.>
