Murder, hostage takings, indiscriminate attacks - between 1973 and 1985 Austria was a major target of international Middle Eastern terrorism. This book reviews the whole complex of events - the hostage takings of Marchegg (1973) and in the OPEC-headquarter in Vienna (1975), the murder of the Viennese town council Heinz Nittel (1981), the attacks against the Viennese synagogue (1981) and the El-Al-counters of Schwechat airport (1985) - for the first time in a scientific way. Based on solid recherché in Austrian and German archives as well as on interviews with contemporary witnesses, the author reconstructs these events, the reaction on part of the authorities, the motives of the terrorist groups and their reliance on state sponsors in the Middle East. Central is the evaluation of Chancellor Bruno Kreisky’s strategy for preventing/combating terrorism. Thus, a forgotten period of recent Austrian history is explored in detail for the first time and set up for new discussion.>
